Cheer Loud!

Did you see the UND Hockey special section in today’s Grand Forks Herald?!  If you haven’t yet, you better get yourself a copy because it’s full of great information to get you ready for the Frozen Four weekend.

Wow this has been a busy week.  Monday night I got to sit in the living room and watch the big TV because it was a “dogfight” of a basketball game.  I didn’t know if I should cheer for the Bulldogs or the Huskies, but since my cousin is part Husky I went with them.

Tuesday night there was more basketball with the women’s team from Notre Dame playing against Texas A&M.  I wasn’t sure what an “Aggie” was, but I’ve got a neighbor whose part Irish (setter), so I went with the Fighting Irish – besides, their ND logo was eerily familiar to me.

Tonight I don’t even have to think about who to cheer for – Go Sioux.  Even if you’re not one of the lucky ones who gets to go to the games, you can still do your part by CHEERING!  Gather with your friends and let’s all Cheer – maybe they’ll be able to hear us in St Paul!   Then, later, check out all the interesting stuff that Brad Schlossman has to say about the game on his blog (http://undhockey.areavoices.com/) and get all the game details in the Grand Forks Herald on Friday.

And, hopefully, we’ll get to do it all over again on Saturday.  I’m doggone excited about the Frozen Four!

Good Luck UND!

Watching the Water

I really like springtime!  People get outside and start walking & running.  Then they take their dogs out with them and I get to see a lot more of my four legged friends.  Of course, you have to be careful in the spring, because there is a lot of stuff around that can get you in trouble.  Like the half-melted snowhill that looks like a great place to climb on for a better view of the neighborhood, until you realize how soft the snow is and you sink past your knees and your belly rubs on the remaining snow — brrr!  Then of course, there is the MUD!  What would spring be without a bunch of muddy pawprints all through the house!!

Well, this spring, I’m going to try to stay out of trouble, but I still want to see what’s happening.  And, this time of year, if you’re not watching basketball or hockey, the next best thing to watch is the rising river.  Fortunately, I don’t have to get very close because the Grand Forks Herald set up a special camera to show me how the water is moving.  They pointed it at the Sorlie Bridge and I’m able to look on the computer to see if the cars can still get between Grand Forks & East Grand Forks.

It’s easy to find.  Just go to www.grandforksherald.com and click on  “Flood Cam 2011″ in the banner right below the section tabs.  Once you get it going you’ll be able to watch the cars as they go across the bridge and keep an eye on the rising water.  Let’s hope the water doesn’t rise too much though!

Enjoy Spring!  And, I’ll get back to you soon.

Springing into Spring

I’ve been a little tired & lazy this week. You see since we had to “spring ahead” on Sunday my schedule got a little out of whack. Normally us dogs like to have about a 4-1 napping ratio — you know, sleep for 4 hours, awake for 1, sleep for 4, awake for 1, etc. But, with the time change, my sleeping pattern got disturbed and I’m just now getting back on track!

At any rate, aren’t you glad that spring is coming?! I can’t wait to get outside and smell the flowers and the grass. It’s just a matter of time. But until then we have to finish up a couple of winter activities — like the UND hockey team winning a championship or 2. And, apparently you people go “mad” in March over basketball — that should be exciting too!

I’m going to keep checking out the Grand Forks Herald to see if my favorite teams are winning. I think you should too!

Treasured Pets

Hey everyone.  I’ve got some great news this week.  I just found out that my friends here at the Grand Forks Herald are putting together a “treasured pet” feature that will run in the paper on March 20th and online.

And for $35.00 you can participate and let everyone know what a great pet you have.  Here’s how you submit your information.

I hope that my owners here at the Herald will put a picture of me in this section — and, hopefully they will have nothing but nice things to say about me.  I think I’ll include a picture here — just to give them a little push.

You’re the best big dog anyone could ask for.

We love you Browser.

Wow, that would give me warm fuzzies if my “owners” let everyone know that.    If you want to make your pet feel extra special, get your picture and sentiment sent in before the deadline of March 10.  You just might make someone’s tail wag a little faster!

Talk to you soon.

Sports & More Sports

Hey everyone. I know that it seems I’ve been missing the past 2 months, but even a dog gets to go on vacation!!  This morning my “boss” informed me that I haven’t been “speaking” much so . . .

I’m back now . . . and just in time for one of my favorite times of year. This is the time when all of my friends over in the sports department start running in circles — just like us dogs do all the time! Isn’t it fun guys?!

Anyway, this weekend if you’re a hockey fan and you are anywhere near Grand Forks, you won’t be disappointed. The Grand Forks Herald is covering all the action — boys, girls, mens and womens. I know that you probably can’t make it to all the games but we can, so check out the Grand Forks Herald to find out how your team did.

It’s not just hockey, as there is UND basketball too! I’ll catch you up on more happenings at the Herald next week. Now I’ve gotta go and cheer for my favorite teams!!

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas!

Here at the Herald we have been busy getting ready for Christmas.  We’ve had a bunch of people buying the Herald as a gift for someone else and because of the great promotion that the Herald has been running, it also provides a gift to the Salvation Army.  The Herald is donating $5.00 for each gift subscription, so we’re hoping it will really add up.  I’ve seen a lot of people (both big and small) ringing bells for the Salvation Army this year, so hopefully they have raised a lot of money.

Today is pretty quiet here at the Herald.  The full time employees have the day off, so it’s just me and a few parttimers in the customer service department.  Of course, we have to get you all a paper every day — including Christmas Day! — so some employees do have to come in to make sure the news gets gathered and printed and delivered to your door in the morning.  I know the subscribers appreciate this and I do too!

Getting ready to enjoy Christmas is pretty easy when you’re a dog.  No presents to buy and no baking to do.  I just sit back and wait for the fun to begin.  Oh, and it’s already been fun.  I have had so many treats in the last week I think my collar is getting a little tight.  And, these aren’t “dog” treats either — sugar cookies, candy, and other Christmas goodies.

And, of course, I can’t wait to see what Santa brings me this year.  I didn’t ask him for anything specific, because he always knows just what I need — afterall, he sees me when I’m sleeping (and, I’m a dog, so that is most of the time).  I hope you all had a chance to visit Santa this season and let him know what presents you could use.  I know he was at the mall getting his picture taken with a lot of you this year.  It must be tiring to smile like that all day — but maybe not, because he is known for being “jolly”.

I just want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year.  I hope you are able to spend time with family and friends, cause that is what is best about the holiday season.

Well, that and leftovers!!

See you soon.

Thanksgiving is Past; Here comes Christmas!

Well, Thanksgiving Day has come and gone.  The Grand Forks Herald was HUGE that day!  There were so many great ads in the paper and all sorts of bargains to be had I just know that someone out there is getting what they want for Christmas – I just hope that it’s me!

Fortunately, all of the people at the Grand Forks Herald who help get the paper to your house everyday did a great job on Thanksgiving – just like they do every day!  We were a little worried that the weather was going to keep that from happening, but a little snow doesn’t slow down our truck drivers and delivery people.  I bet they were tired though; after all the paper weighed over 3 pounds!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving Day dinner!  I know I did.  On Thanksgiving we are suppose to give thanks for all that is good – so, I’m thankful that the folks here at the Grand Forks Herald gave me a good home!  And, I’m thankful for all the people that greet me with smiles and hugs when I’m out and about.

Now I have to start making my list for Santa.  After all, once Thanksgiving is over, Christmas is just around the corner!

I hope to see you soon!

Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day, a day to honor our veterans for their service to our country and for protecting our freedom.   Of course, we all know that we should thank our veterans every day!

Veterans Day is observed on November 11 and is intended to thank and honor all those men and women who served in the military.  Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living Veterans for their service.  It’s important to remember those Veterans who have died, but it is also important to honor those living Veterans who spent time serving their country, whether in times of war or in peacetime.  Every veteran has given of themselves to insure our freedom and should be recognized.

On this Veterans Day, I found a little history about the military that you may not be aware of.  Not only have men & women protected us, but many animals have served as well.  Here are a few photos of some dogs that, with their handlers, have saved lives, protected soldiers and served as guards.  In fact, in World War II, most of the dogs that assisted the military were actually family pets that were “loaned” to the military to be trained for missions to assist in the war effort.  After their military service they were returned to their families, where they could once again be the “family pet”.   And, this wasn’t just a few dogs.  By 1944 they had 20,000 dogs, of which over 10,000 actually passed the “training” required to be put into active duty.

Today, the dogs serving our country are actually “owned” by the military and trained by military personnel known as “handlers”.

The photo to the right is a little guy known as Sargeant Stubby.  He is a hero from World War I who spent much of his time in Europe protecting his troops from harm.  One thing he was able to do was alert the men to the enemy using gas.  This allowed the men to get their gas masks in place before any harm was done.  Unfortunately, they were not able to fashion a gas mask to properly seal over Stubby’s muzzle and one time he actually was “gassed”.  Fortunately, he recovered from that incident and returned to his military duties.  The little jacket that he is wearing was sewn for him by some French women who thought he should have a place to display all his medals.

I may be partial to the dogs (afterall, I am one) who served our country; but,  on this Veterans Day, I want you to remember ALL the Veterans who have served our country.  Take time out of your busy day to thank them & their families for all they’ve given to protect our freedom.  They all deserve our thanks, today and every day!  So, let me say-

THANK YOU VETERANS!

Coloring Contests and Thanksgiving

Thanks to everyone who treated me so nicely at the UND football game last Saturday!!  I met lots of new little friends and a few big friends too.  If you were there, you probably got one of the green and white pom-poms that my Herald friends were handing out.  Unfortunately all the cheering with pom-poms didn’t seem to be enough to give the Sioux a victory this time.

If you were at the game or watched on TV you may have seen a couple winners of our football coloring contest.  Boy, can you kids do some creative coloring with your crayons and markers.  Keep up the good work!

We are going to have another coloring contest picture in the paper on Thanksgiving day.  Bet you can’t guess what the picture will be?  If you’re a lucky winner this time, you could receive a $25 gift card from Home of Economy or tickets to attend a UND basketball game.  So, after you get your fill of turkey and check out all the great ads in the paper on Thanksgiving– that is if you can lift it, as it’s going to be the biggest paper yet — you can pull out your crayons/markers and enter another contest.  Best of luck to all of you!

Thanks to all our Grand Forks Herald carriers that do such a wonderful job of getting the paper out to the customers each day.  The Thanksgiving paper is going to take a little extra effort to deliver, but I know you’ll all do a great job!

I’ll be talking to you soon.

Are you Ready for Some Football?!

Hey, did everyone enjoy Halloween?!  I did.  It’s always fun to see all the ghosts, princesses, super heros, pirates, pumpkins and other creatures out and about.  I didn’t get to go outside and participate, but I sure did see a lot of folks (both big & little) dressed up this year.  And, it looked like the weather was perfect for a great night out.

So what will November bring for us . . . well, I’m going to the UND football game on Saturday!  The Grand Forks Herald had a football coloring contest last week and since this week’s football game is being sponsored by the Herald, I get to help hand out the prizes during the game.  I can’t wait to see the game; and, hopefully UND will WIN!

I wonder if I should wear my Sioux football jersey?  I just don’t want the other team to think I’m really a Sioux player and tackle me!

If you want to go to the game, check out Thursday’s Grand Forks Herald where you will find a coupon for 20% off the price of one ticket.  Take your coupon to the Alerus ticket office to purchase your game ticket at a discount.  Then, on game day, you just might get one of the “freebie” handouts the Herald is giving away.  It all sounds like a fun day that I wouldn’t want to miss.

Hope to see you there!  Go Sioux!!
